Battery Life
Points about battery life from macintouch.com:
1. Exercise the battery monthly. They stagnate if not used regularly. Battery University states the exercise is needed after every 30 charges (cycles). Apple is likely trying to simplify so I go with the 30 (partial) cycles as I don't use it as frequently.
2. If not to be used in the near future, discharge it to 40 - 66% and store in refrigerator (NOT FREEZER; keep above 0°C/32°F). I keep my extra battery there and warm it then charge it for flights.
3. Never allow to fully discharge and leave at that state. This is what likely killed the camcorder battery for Herman. Canon (mine is a ZR50) states to remove the battery from the camcorder when not in use as it will discharge it even if in off position.
4. Avoid leaving it plugged into the charger for prolonged periods such as sitting at a desk for weeks. Though I believe it's the least problematic, Li-ion batteries don't like being at a fully charged state for long periods either. As Herman said, it's best to use them or they will crystallize and lose life.

The worst thing you can do for your laptop battery is always keep it on the charger or charge it while its only half full. This will diminish the life of the battery giving you less hours of operating time. The ideal way to charge your laptop battery pack would be to use it until it is completely discharged and then charge it fully.
The second issue to consider would be your usage habits. Using multimedia such as movies and music will kill your battery a lot quicker. Especially doing operations that are CPU intensive. Playing games will diminish your power supply a lot quicker than say, browsing the internet.
There are also different settings that can help preserve your battery life. Windows has different functions for laptop. For instance you can set your power usage depending on what you are doing. You can set your laptop to act like a desktop if you are near a power supply to get the full performance out of your system. On the other hand you can also set it to use power as efficiently as possible if you are on the move. These setting change things such as the amount of power the CPU uses, the brightness of the screen and more.
In the end its up-to the individual user. Some laptops come with the option of a second battery which can double the power your laptop has at your disposal but this is often costly. Also there are more advanced batteries that can be used but again they will cost you extra.

How To Charge Laptop Without Charger?
Do this, you only need a power and laptop ac adapter. You can charge the laptop battery alone, or place the battery inside its laptop. The convenience is that its laptop can be charged with shut or on. Maybe you can conside about its external laptop battery, it make laptop battery life easier.

1. When use laptop battery, pls recharge after battery exhaust. Charging the battery up full one time. Don't charge or discharge it halfway. Do make the battery is in best case.

What is short circuit? How does it affect the battery? How to avoid the short circuit? - Care battery life
It can cause exterior short circuit if the two exterior ends of battery connect any conductor.
Battery types are different, short circuit maybe cause different serious results. As the battery can't be used again, leak liquid, explosion and more. So, don't have the exterior of battery short circuit.
Don't place battery in wet circumstance. and don't mix the battery with conductor, as the key in pocket together, which maybe all cause the short circuit.

First Charge Laptop Battery
For your first use laptop battery, you must fully drain the laptop battery until the laptop turns off of itself. After that plug in your charger and allow it charge for 12 hours or depending on what the technician has told you. 12 hours is the max and you can use it while charging. I'm not saying it would take 12 hours to charge rather it is the first charge to really awaken the ions performance after a long time. It's good to charge new laptop battery for three circles at first. After that it will take less than 2 hours to fully charge your laptop battery. Best charging time about 3 to 4 hours.
This is recommended so that the laptop battery will heat up for the time allowing ions to reawaken.
